| — | Houston judge Lanny Moriarty • On his decision to sentence a 17-year-old honor student, who (since her parents divorced and both skipped town) has had to work both a full and a part time job just to support two siblings, to spend a day in jail, after she missed school recently. Diane Tran, who also takes dual-credit college-level courses, says that she’s often so tired that she finds it difficult to wake up for school. But that didn’t sway Moriarty, who chose to make an example of Tran. If you think this sucks, we direct you to this Change.org petition. (via shortformblog) |

Reversing Vandalism was a community art project that was initated in 2001 when the San Francisco Public Library began finding vandalized books hidden under the shelves. As the librarians began to catalog the damaged the books, they realized that over 600 of them dealt with GLBT issues, women’s issues, or HIV/AIDS.
Although the vandal was ultimately caught and held accountable for their actions, the librarians felt that simply discarding the damaged books would only reinforce the crime, and so they invited people from the community to turn the damaged books into works art, ultimately creating over 200 original art pieces from participants in twenty states and three countries.
To read more about the project and see additional works of art from the exhibit you can check out the library’s online gallery.
So satisfying to see that something worthwhile could be created from bigoted racism
I LOVE food. I’ve been brought up in a culture where food is central to living and it is definitely one of my greatest passions. Unfortunately when I realised that my clothes weren’t fitting properly and I decided that I needed to immediately change my things in my life and stop using being on holiday as an excuse.
I’ve always been against dieting and calorie counting but in an effort to truly understand what I was eating I joined CalorieCount.com. I’m competitive person so having actual number to compare myself against has been a great way to subtlety change my behaviour and achieve sustainable change.
It’s helped curb some of my boredom eating because I know I’ll have to log how much I’m consuming; I’ve started swapping products for healthier ones and any exercise I do gains me points so I have encouragement to do physical activity and incidental exercise.
Some people on the website talk about changing the way you think about food, to try and view it as a fuel. But I don’t want to remove my passion for food, instead I hope that I can alter my eating habits just enough to lose weight and enjoy it.
